HDD from PVR/DVR unit, wont stay initialised in Win7, ONLY way to format was Ubuntu, formatted as NTFS then boot in Win7 and the HDD was recognised and initialised, but it wont stay that way. 2 or 3 restart and there we go again, HDD isn't initialised, computer management sees it as 128gb when in fact its 1 tb and the only way to make it work again is to boot Ubuntu from dvd and format it again. I tried full format (15 hours), quick format but nothing seems to make it seen by win7 for more than a couple hours. And its the same story under OSX. After I was ready to use that HDD for target practice, the Ubuntu method was proposed to me on this site and im hoping that some of you guys would have a useful tip again ! Please, I need help !!

Hi

Formatting can't be MBR (or gpt)
That relates to partitioning which is done before formatting

Both wd & Seagate have windows based diagnostics which can test hard disks attached by usb to sata bridge adapters , eSata or internally to sata ports

Hi

I would use the manufacturers hard disk diagnostics to test for bad sectors or dying hard disk

Hirens CD has a collection of hard disk diagnostics including WD datalife guard for windows (runing under a Win PE based on XP and will work with most brands of hard disk).

If hardware disk tests are passed consider wiping MBR of hard disk to remove all trace of UNIX based boot manager which were on disk when used in PVR/DVR
