Can I run a DDR3L 1600 MHz stick in DDR3 slot ? My laptop's motherboard is HM55 and runs on P6200 processor. The older RAMs operate on 1.5V and DDR3L asks only for 1.35V.

Solution

There's no risk of that. The JEDEC DDR3 specification...

I have already read that thread. Read the thread title again. It's "DDR3L RAM in DDR3 slot" not "DDR3 on DDR3L slots". Both are different cases.

which ram are you currently using ddr3 or ddr3l? if you are using ddr3 then you can add another ddr3 ram and if you are using ddr3l then you can only upgrade to ddr3l just dont mix them both and you will be fine

I tried the currently available 4GB DDR3 RAMs in the market which are 512 x 64-bit and they are not working on my motherboard. Tried both 1333 MHz and 1600 MHz. My old RAM is 2GB 2Rx8 DDR3 1333 MHz 1.5V and a 1GB 1Rx8 also works on it.. Currently, I am having a 4GB 1Rx8 DDR3L1600 MHz 1.35V in my hand.

That's why I am asking if I should try it or not. Don't want to fry it.

if your current ram is DDR3L1600 MHz 1.35V you must install a ram with same specifications or only install ddr3
you simply cannot run ddr3l with ddr3.

DDR3L SDRAM is backwards compatible with DDR3 SDRAM. The chips themselves are identical, the DDR3L versions are simply high quality samples that meet certain performance requirements.

So, it shouldn't be a problem running a DDR3L 1.35V RAM on a DDR3 1.5V slot ?

If the DDR3 version of the same chip would work normally, yes it will.

Yes, the DDR3 version of the same works normally. I am just worried about the voltage difference, placing a 1.35V into a 1.5V slot. Don't wanna fry it.

There's no risk of that. The JEDEC DDR3 specification requires that the DRAM integrated circuits be able to tolerate no less than 1.9 volts. Enthusiasts are far more likely to damage their memory controller than they are to damage their DDR3 SDRAM. The JEDEC standard for DDR3 is 1.5 volts +/- 5%, and the JEDEC standard for DDR3L is 135 volts +/- 5%, these values should be observed when stability and interoperability are important. As I mentioned previously, all of the major manufacturers that sell DDR3L chips (Micron, Samsung, and Hynix) use the same chip for both DDR3 and DDR3L variants. The DDR3L chips are selected from samples which have been tested to meet performance requirements at 1.35 volts. By design, these are guaranteed to also operate at 1.5 volts.

Sorry for digging up this thread but I was googling for an answer and couldn't find it. I have Intel HM55 too and I need to know if it supports DDR3L 1600 MHz sticks. Have you tried that stick on your laptop?

Answering too late. If anybody else looking for the answer, yes, it does work. I installed it 1.5 yrs ago and It has been working since then without any issues.

Might not always work. I installed DDR3L in my Acer Aspire 5745 G and it didn't work. It has Intel HM55 too.
