Hello again folks,

Setup:

core i7 4790k @ stock 4.0
8gb (2x4gb) crucial ballistix sport @ 1600
gigabyte z97x gaming 7
gigabyte gtx 970 windforce oc'd to 1400
coolermaster hyper 212 evo
evga supernova 750w g2 gold 80+
toshiba q seres ssd 120 gb
intel 530 series 240 gb

So as the title says i'm noticing some low gpu usage while gaming. I use msi afterburner to monitor in-game, as well as hwmonitor/cpu-z. All of my temps seem to be fine, cpu doesn't usually even hit 60 c while gaming or with heavy usage. Idles between 20-28 c. The gpu doesn't even hit mid 60's under heavy usage. I've run the heaven/valley benchmarks extensively and those seem to be the only time where the gpu is full utilized. Even then, the temps typically stay below 65 c.

What i have noticed though, is in games like WoW, LoL, Skyrim, Xcom, Rome 2 etc. i'm not typically seeing full utilization of the gpu, in wow the usage will actually drop to sub 50% at times. I haven't really noticed a drop in performance however. In most games i'm getting 100+ fps, but in others, like rome 2, i'm seeing very low gpu usage and very low frame rates at times even after lowering settings significantly.

So far, I've checked to see if all my drivers are up to date, and they are. I've set the nvidia control pannel to prefer maximum performance. I've checked background programs and even with malware/virus protections turned off, i'm seeing the same thing happen.

Could my cpu actually be the culprit here? ARe there other things i'm overlooking?

Well first of all look at the hardware you are using. I would be surprised if they were made to hit 50% usage. And as for Rome 2 it is badly optimized. I read that after patch 7 it got a little better but you to install the patch to see. And this is nothing to fuss over really it is good thing they are not being used so much else it will lead to some really high temperature though both the processor and graphic card are for overclocking capabilities. Try some heavy games like Battlefield or CoD.

That's why i'm posting.

In most games even with the low gpu utilization, it's not a huge deal. I'm not really seeing frames dip below 50ish, except for in super packed high-pop severs in WoW. That said, my lower end frame rates, in a couple situations, have been low 20's. That's mostly exclusive to Rome, but i know a lot of people have been having issues with.

I'm just wondering why i'm not seeing full utilization in games and only in benchmarks and if it's something i should be concerned with.

For a single game, maybe check for game updates/patches.

Your GPU won't hit 99% because there is no reason for it to do so. If you have VSYNC on it will only try to output 60/120/144 fps (hz), so the usage will not hit 99%.

Try disabling vysnc in game and in the NCP. Check if usage goes up.

Yeah, I figured that could be the issue. I just didn't know if it was exclusively a good thing or if there could have been another issue at play. Thanks for the response.
