CrossFire with old Graphics cards

I have just put together a new build, nothing special but it should tick over for a decent time.

ASUS Z97 Deluxe
i5-4690
8gb DDR3 1866
720W PSU (cant remember the model)

The graphic card is my old one:
Radeon HD 6850 1GB 256-Bit GDDR5

I can get another one of these dirt cheap and can crossfire them. My question is, is this model too old to be worth using even with the Xfire, or do i need to pony up and get a new GPU?

Thanks!

Honestly i'm not sure how much of an improvement you are goign to get with getting another one of those cards. What is your budget and must you stay with AMD. Currently the best cards out and it would fit your computer nicely are the Nvidia GTX 970's. They overclock like a beast with zero voltage increase, run cooler and would out perform your card in crossfire by a good amount.

If you are wanting to know WHICH 970 to get.... I suggest MSI or Asus. MSI benchmarks the best in most online ratings and both the MSI and ASUS have the Zero Fan spin feature that won't spin the fans until the GPU gets higher than 50-60c so it is much quieter.

The 6850 is aging but not that bad. Seems silly to get a card that old at this point
although CF would give you a performance boost.

It all boils down to the fact the other posters are assuming you can afford a 970 but for all I know
you may have spent all your money on the CPU and mobo

In short the 6850 will work but it is only low-midrange

Yes I would go for the 970.

Even if you were to Crossfire your 6850's, you'd be looking at a bench around 4400. The 970 will do about 8800.

But its up to you. If you can get a 6850 for $20 and you don't care about maxing out game settings in the latest games right now, then that would be a decent value for you.

As a reference, a pair of 6850's will run slightly slower than a single 7950.

Thanks all. The unanimous consensus is a 970 then!

.. but

My budget can't really stretch to the £300+ range. I just spend about £450 for everything else, so my bank account and I are not really on talking terms.

I'm not that fussed when it comes to max quality and performance for graphics and am happy with semi decent as opposed to high end.

Are there any good cards in the £150-200 range which wont be obsolete very quickly?

I will get the 770 then. Probably should not have left it so long before swapping the GPU. Having to replace everything in one hit really hurts :(

Thanks
