I'm in the works of helping my friend build his first gaming pc. And on his budget of $900 including the os I need to know what would be "future proof" for a gaming/editing rig. I've already built my computer with a i7 and a r9 280x under $900, but I sadly cannot get those deals anymore.

Any help is appreciated,
Thanks

The i5 is always going to be stronger in any task.

If you can fit it into the budget then go i5.
If not the 8320 is very decent cpu and should still be happy with it.
Even if doing stock clock speeds, get an upgraded cooler for the 8320 though.

How about for game streaming/recording? Would the extra cores help on the fx

Most streaming and recording applications are multi-threaded, and will run better on the FX, especially in video editing the FX will be faster, but in gaming the i5 would be better, but i would still get the i5 though as the socket the FX uses is a dead socket where as the i5 uses LGA 1150, so make sure to get a Z97 Board with it, so when you want you can upgrade to broadwell.
