Thank you very much for all the helpful tips from everyone!

Hey guys, how you doing? Hope you're all well.

I am looking to upgrade my computer. It's currently running:
i5-3570K @4.4GHz 1.32V (70C max)
Gigabyte 7970GHz @1100/1500
8GB 1600Hz
830 128GB SSD
Z77 MB
Seasonic Bronze 620W.

The problem I'm having with the 7970Ghz is that I'm completly unable to overclock it, at all. I've calculated at http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine that my entire system, under full load, takes about 505W.

What happens when I try to overclock the GPU via the AMD CCC is, I go to AMD OverDrive, increase the GPU clock settings to 1110, or 1125. The card then works well for about 5-15 minutes, and then I get a blue screen with an error code I'm not fast enough to read (I don't have the logs, wiped them lately and havent overclocked in a while) and then I restart and quickly change it back to 1100.

If I try to increase the power limit settings to +10-20%, the same thing happens.

Does anyone know of this problem, or maybe have a solution?

Now for my second question. I'm looking at getting the MSI 970. Great performance, great price, and it uses less power than the 7970, which, I hope, means I won't need to upgrade my PSU to use and overclock my new card.

Is 620W enough to power an overclocked 970 and an i5-3570K @4.4 GHZ /1.32V under full load?
WIll I need to upgrade to something 700W, or even a 750W? I'm not currently planning on SLI'ing the 970, not for now, anyway.

Thank you very much, and I hope you have a wonderful week.

I think you might be pushing your 7970 beyond what it can do. I personally have mine at 1050MHz on the core so if your stable at 1100 I think you should take that as a win.

The performance increase you will get by going above that isn't worth the risk of blowing your card up.

Other than that, the 970 should use less power than your 7970 so I don't see any reason for needing a PSU upgrade.

your gpu is already clocked quite high . try msi afterburner and see if voltage control is unlocked.adding some extra voltage most probable will allow higher speeds. mind your temps though! about your psu it is more than sufficient. gtx 970 draws a lot less power actually!

EDIT: i would consider 1.32v to much for 24/7 for your i5 . are you sure such voltage is needed for 4.4ghz ?

I have tried to go lower, but it just isnt enough. I've been running 1.32 for about two years now, the temps are really low and its very stable.

The 7970GHz apparently doesn't have unlocked voltage. I'm unable to tweak it through MSI Afterburner, or any other overclocking software available on the market currently.

As Bignastysid says, looks like your HD7970 is just not a great overclocker and quite a few HD7970GHz cards were voltage locked.
As far as I can see the GTX970 uses less juice than the hD7970, stock or OC'd, so you'll actually be giving the PSU a bit of a rest. ;)
Oh, and BTW, I've recently swapped from a HD7950 to a GTX970 (same i5 4690K rig otherwise)...Ye Gods that card is FAST!
