Is clock speed more important than memory size in a graphics card?

Right now I am stuck between the Radeon R9 280 and the EVGA GeForce GTX 660. They both have the same stats, except that the EVGA GeForce GTX 660 has more clock speed; but people say the radeon R9 280 is better overall. Can someone help me out and tell me which one is better?

get an r9 285, should be same price as 280 but with more features.

You can't compare speeds when they aren't the same architecture. That goes for amd vs amd or nvidia vs nvidia too. The 280 is quite a bit better than a 660. Just for reference, we have this quick chart to look at. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107-7.html
