A few things to note....

1. The motherboard is likely overkill but I left it in for pricing towards my top end. I also don't want to be stuck in the situation of not being able to upgrade hardware due to an outdated motherboard in 1-2 years.

2. I'm looking upgrade in the future to running SLI/Crossfire with two cards. I am also considering splurging for the GTX 970 though I'd have to bring down the overall cost in other areas to compensate. I know nothing about optimizing performance relative to cost. Advice in that area would be greatly appreciated.

3. I know almost nothing and don't care much about sound output. If I can hear where footsteps in CS:GO are coming from, I'm content.

4. I already own a Razer Naga 2012 and Bose speakers so I'm not looking to buy those peripherals.

Assume I'd be playing just about any type of game. Some examples include SC2, DotA 2, Civ V, CS:GO, BF4, Day Z, Arma 3

Let me know if I can provide any other information. Thanks everyone!

PS This is a new build based on an Intel chipset and I haven't yet done a lot of research verify part compatibility though connections.

Estimated date: 11/7

I add a Z97 board. No real reason to go Z87 anymore.

I was hoping to stay in the ballpark of $1500 but aside from really downgrading my processor/motherboard to an AMD build (R9 series maybe?) I don't see it happening with the 970. Unfortunately transitioning from a laptop causes you to incur extra costs (monitor, keyboard, etc). I'm also pretty adamant on getting both a SSD and HDD. I suppose I could downgrade to a 128 GB SDD but I don't see the point to save only a couple bucks.

I suppose I could get a cheaper motherboard, but I'm afraid of it getting outdated quickly

Unless you downgrade something, you aren't going to be able to hit $1500 with a 970 or anything above a 270X.

A Z97 board will give you an upgrade path into Broadwell, but that is it. After Broadwell the 1150 socket will be discontinued.
