The user manual clearly states that it supports 8GB modules for a total of 32GB. It also states it will support up to 64GB if 16GB DDR3 modules ever become available, which we know they probably won't, but they might with the upcoming release of Broadwell looming. Pretty doubtful though after DDR4 has already hit the market and resources are being utilized to advance that technology rather than worry about a module platform that will be relatively dead in two years time.

I think it's more likely to be an issue with the slot placement or a BIOS setting. I'd try one module at a time in the A2 slot, which is the yellow slot closest to the cpu. That is the slot recommended for single module operation.
His module part number does NOT indicate a 16gb module. There ARE no 16GB modules except for those used in servers or those that are DDR4. There are no consumer desktop 16gb DDR3 modules. His part number indicates an 8GBx2 kit.

Make sure you have them installed in slots A2 and B2. Those are the slots designated in the manual for 2 module dual channel operation. They should be the two yellow colored slots which are the second over from the cpu and the one furthest away from the cpu.

If you're able to get into the BIOS, try going in an resetting to default or optimal values. If not, try resetting the bios by jumping the pins for cmos clear on the motherboard.
