Should i keep my current Gainward GTX 560 Ti SLI or upgrade to a single GTX 970?

My current setup is:
i5 2500k
Asrock Z77 extreme4
8GB G-Skill Rip Raws
Antec 750W
Cooler Master Silencio 550

At the moment I am getting extreme heat at the top of the case.
It is running 1x120mm fan in the front and 1x120mm in the rear.
Using a stock CPU intel cooler.

My plan is to change the 2 current case fans and add 1 more fan in the front to make it 3.
Also upgrade my CPU cooler to a CM hyper 212 EVO.

Any other suggestions will help too.

Solution
Yes maybe the graphics card is blocking airflow from the front to move to the back.

Try removing one graphics card and monitor the temperature. Or get the GTX 970!! :)
The GTX 970 will be the best option, single card are usually preferable for gaming over SLI unless you game on multiple monitors.

And if you didn't know, the GTX 970 performs similar to a GTX Titan. :)

Regarding the heat. What is your case? Have you overclocked the CPU?

The case doesnt have a fan ontop, only 2 in the front and 1 in the rear.

I havent OC the cpu yet.

I'm getting like 70 degree or more while idling or playing WoW.

Maybe cause the first GPU is getting no air because the 2nd GPU is blocking it. Hence the large amount of heat.

I just wanted to add, from my experience of having GTX 570 SLI since 2010, I hadn't run into a single problem until I played The Evil WIthin this year.

What "problems" are you referring to? Maybe there is micro stutter that I'm not aware of or sensitive to because even before my GTX 570 SLI I had a 9800 gx2, but I have played with a single GTX 570, so I'm not sure.

Having just upgraded from a 560ti SLI rig to a 970 yesterday, I can say that yes, it is definitely a big improvement. BF4 is running at 60+ FPS on Ultra with 3D glasses now, as is pretty much everything else I've thrown at it. (1080p)

And this is still with an older core i5 2400 CPU.

I had been running 2xPNY xlr8 cards and one would always be 20 degrees hotter than the other, under load. They were the same part # but obviously different revisions. I think one was a reference design and the other not. Never any problems though. Ran for 3 years or so.

That said, a cheap or free 560ti would still give the OP a nice boost. My SLI setup still ran most everything acceptably well at normal-high settings in non-3d glasses mode.

What's running hot your gpu or cpu? Your CPU desperately needs a better cooler if you game. Stock cpu coolers are all junk! The hyper 212 does an awesome job of cooling the 2500k if installed correctly. Also you would see an increase but of how much. If you could sell your gpu's for half of what a 970 cost I would do it. If not? Well then depending on how your game performance is now I may not even swap out. When running sli one car will always be hotter. Make sure you are running some sort of software like Msi afterburner or evga precision x or something so you can set custom graphics card fan profile. This helps a ton with noise and temp. My 780ti's were running farly warm and getting sorta loud. I adjusted the fan profiles and made custom curves and now I can't hear my gpu's and the cards are cooler than before. Good luck!

I came here to ask the same question. I'm thinking I might buy an extra 560ti because they are about £50 second-hand on eBay, compared to £270 for the GTX 970.

That should give me a boost, though I'll still be a way off the 970.

Curious to hear others experiences of upgrading (or going SLI).
