Recent games have upped the minimum amount of RAM from 4 to 6 GB. My question is can I run games like COD AW, AC: Unity and FC4 on 4 GB RAM, HD8730m (1 GB) and i5 3317U @ 720p with ~30fps (low-medium details)? Videos uploaded on youtube often do not always specify the settings or any other tweaks used.

And how much of a performance hit will I take by using 2 GB less?

as has been said, the ram is probably not the real issue, the laptop gpu is probably going to be trhe deciding factor of how well the games run.

heres some more information about your laptop gpu. The problem with adding ram, it might not be compatable with the ram already installed in the laptop and causes errors, freezing or cause it not to boot at all. If your going to add ram find a match for what is already in there or buy a new ram kit and remove the old stuff.

On pen and paper 4 should be enought but what its like in reality I have no idea. But since ram is probably the most easy thing to upgrade id stick with what you have now and it it is needed then buy 2 if not 4gb more of it

with a desktop vendors of games have seen that windows with 4g of ram has only 3.2g of usable ram then if people use onboard video they can lose from 256k-1meg of shared system ram. then on top you have the os and and any open program that launched at start up like anti virus and malware. with 8g of system ram most times there 4 or more gigs of free ram for games.
