Hi all! this is my first TH post so please go easy on me ^.^

We have a portable desktop at home which my dad bought from a Japanese friend in 2009. This Sony VAIO desktop is an exclusive Japanese model, so i am having a hard time upgrading both software and hardware. For now I will be focusing on the how to's and what's of upgrading its RAM. Initially, I downloaded programs that automatically search for the maximum upgrades (specifically RAM and also to find info about the motherboard) --- but to no avail. I've managed to take out the RAMs, though. There are 2 slots. Each with 1GB (one is ddr2-533, the other ddr2-667). For the glory of knowledge, I tried my luck with Google and here is where I got to:

http://www.datamemorysystems.com/dms-memory/sony/vaio-vgc-lj51b-p.htm

The site says i can upgrade up to 4GB but the maximum available chip listed for retail is just 1GB. If possible, I'd love to make it to 4GB but i think this might not be possible. With a single RAM? Or 2x2GB? Please do tell. What else am I missing here? Please advise. I'd be more than eager to provide further details (and pictures, or is this possible here?).Thanks ahead!

PS: No geeky/nerdy computer jargons pls.. I'm not very good with it . Cheers!

You'd need to get two, 2 GB memory sticks. You can get them all over the web. It isn't cheap though, about $45 for a set of 2GB modules. Make sure to get the dual stick kit. Check out Amazon or Newegg. Make sure to get the 4 GB kit that has 2, 2 GB sticks. It's DDR2 PC2-5300 667 MHz. Make sure it's for a laptop it will be 200 pin SODIMM. Big words I know, but important to know you get the right ones.

The machine uses SODIMMs, which is a laptop form RAM type.

Your best bet is to get 2x2GB chips of SODIMM laptop RAM of DDR2 667MHz.

BUt finding DDR2 memory is not always easy or even worth it as it really is VERY outdated, which usually means the CPU is heavily outdated to and not worth spending money on.

edit: I mean, if i ever come by that 4gb ddr2 which is most probably , nonexistent. (",)

totally okay with it sir! appreciate the help. I've done enough Googling to at least know about DIMMS and SODIMMS, hehe. Now here is where i actually gaffed,.. I totally forgot to include in the description of my problem that i'm from the Philippines and that products suggested in the answers may not be available here. I'm glad i got the answers for my concern, though. I'll be picking your answer as THE answer! ^^

Thanks again!

There is no way to know if the slots can support a single 4GB chip.

So you can try, but can not tell you for sure. 2x2GB is more likely to work.

ANY brand of SODIMM of similar MHz is fine.

You'd want to use two memory sticks so the computer can run in dual channel mode, which makes it run faster than if you had just one. And yes, you can use any brand, but make sure both of the sticks are the same speed.
