mobo: Asrock H77M
wireless card: D-Link DWA 525 rev A2
USB wifi dongle: TP-Link TLWN727N

Hey all, I'm at a loss as to how to solve this problem. The short of it is my wireless card stopped working but my usb wifi dongle works just fine.

Long version:
My PC used to be right beside my router and the wireless card worked fine. I'd get lag spikes and intermittent connections at times but I figured it was just our crappy ISP.

I recently moved my PC to my room a little farther down the hall from the router and now I get nothing. It says I'm connected to the network but pages don't load at all. It sometimes picks stuff up (ie. dropbox will sync or part of a page will load) but that happens very rarely. First, I thought it was because of the extra distance from the router (that's all that's changed, really... unless something auto-updated in the background) but then I plugged in a usb wifi dongle and now I have a connection. Signal isn't great, and it drops a few websites and looses "sight" of the network at times but it's consistent enough.

I don't know where to start trying to solve this problem. I tried updating drivers (manually) but I still get the same problem.

Any help much appreciated.

The router came from the my ISP. Its a SpeedSurf 504AN. I got it this year when our older one just up and died. I've never upgraded the firmware on this one.

I also tried changing the channel to 9 but the problem still persists. My laptop can access the internet fine from right beside my desktop.. That's why I have a feeling that the problem is with my wireless card :(

Ok. I kinda solved it.

Yes, I've already tested a wireless usb pen drive (TP-Link TLWN727N) and I can browse on it but the signal is weak and drops often.

That's why I thought the problem was with the wireless card (D-Link DWA 525 rev A2) so I 'panic-bought' a new one (TP-Link WN851ND) and replaced the D-Link. Initially, I had the exact same problem as the D-Link.

Then I realized that both routers are 'compatible' with windows 8 (generic drives, i guess) but the manufacturers don't have specific drivers for Win 8.

Did some digging and found the TP-Link's chipset and installed the drivers from there ( https://www.atheros.cz/atheros-wireless-download.php?chipset=33&system=8 )

It works now. Signal still dropped once while working last night but it may just be due to distance + concrete walls + ISP's not-so-great router.

End of the day, I'm not sure if the D-Link card was the problem or just the drivers but everything's working fine now and I don't want to swap the card back out to check.

Thanks for the help anyway :)
