I am fairly computer illiterate, and am in my seventies. I've tried to find why my computer fails to recognize my CDs and Flash Drives. I need to load a program with CDs, and load a file to my genealogy program.

I found a page that indicated I should turn off all but one of my firewalls. I think I have accomplished this, and am only using the firewall that came with windows. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The firewall would have nothing at all with the computer reading the disks or drives. Exactly what happens when you put in the disks in? Are you just waiting for autostart to pop up or are you going to My Computer and trying to install the program that way.

You do only want one firewall active, if...

I don't think its a firewall issue.

Can you advise.
1. Make and Model of your computer - desktop or laptop - how old is it?
2. Type of operating system you are using (Apple iOS, Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 etc.)
3. When you plug in the USB drive do you get any messages in the bottom right of the screen advising it is searching for a device driver
4. Do you get any on screen messages at all?
5. Do you have a mouse plugged into any of the USB ports
6. If the answer to 5 above is no, can you plug in a mouse and see if it is recognized
7. The CD you are trying to read - was it a purchased CD or one that someone burned for you?
8. Do you get any on screen messages when you pop the CD in the CD-ROM drive - if so what do they say?
9. What make/model/size of USB flash drive are you using

Sorry to ask so many questions but first I need to establish.

1. Are you trying to read a Windows Program with an Apple Computer i.e there is a fundamental system incompatibility

2. Are the USB ports actually working properly - i.e. they recognize a USB device (like a mouse) when one is plugged into them.

You do only want one firewall active, if you have more than one or more than one anti-virus program running, you need to unstall all but one. If you have a router, that has a firewall built in, if you don't have a router you should get one.
