Hello,

I have a computer I built about a month ago, first time. I went for the standard 8 gigs of ram, but I find myself Maxing it out Running a few Java Programs. At the moment i have G.SKILL Sniper Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 mounted on a Ausu z97-Pro Mobo (4 ram slots)

Now, I want to updrade to at least 16g, Is it in my best interest to pick up a second set (identical) of 2x4gb Sicks? Cost would be 93$ + shipping.

My second option would be Grab a 2x8gb G.SKILL Sniper Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 for 169$ + Shipping

if I went the second option, I'd sell the 8gb kit for 70-80$?

Anyway just looking for advice on the best way to upgrade this.

One more question, Is it normal for my windows OS to use 38% Of 8gb ram on startup?

Thanks

Solution
1) I'm surprised a few Java programs are using up all your memory. Sounds more like a memory leak or other issue but not sure what you're running.

Also, I wouldn't leave anything open when running a heavy game anyway. I've played all the major games and NEVER had an issue with memory usage (have 8GB). Unless a game is actually crashing with an "out of memory" warning it's unlikely you really ran out of memory.

Still, we're just now starting to see more System RAM usage since the new consoles have higher specs so I wouldn't call it a waste of money any more to future proof with 16GB.

2) As long as the memory sticks are IDENTICAL I don't have an opinion on buying a new kit or not. Just do what is cheapest. Probably a hassle to SELL...

3) 38% usage on startup?
Yes, very typical. Windows is pre-buffering data you might use such as parts of programs it remembers you use. You actually WANT this to happen to minimize loading from a physical drive.

If you were starting at well over 50% of 8GB then it would be an issue.
