Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 vs WD Green.

I'm getting a 3TB hard drive for use in an external hard drive, and I'll like to only choose one of these. Looking more for reliability than speed, because they're meant for storing movies/videos/data.

Thanks!

Hi there Scarecow,

I would say that WD Green will suit your purposes as is it designed to be used as secondary storage. Due to its power savings characteristics it runs quiet and generates less heath(which is a good thing when talking about reliability).
Regarding the cache that Markkk mentioned, I would say that all the current WD Green model have 64MB of cache.

Green drives have lower cache, slower rpm speed, and that's why they are ideal for external HDD.
The 7200 runs a lot hotter in an external enclosure.
Go green for external it will last longer - it's what its designed for.

Compare the MTBF on both drives the higher number should be better.

Also Consider are they both USB3? - Design, Looks & Power adapter

I think working for WD makes him just a little bias, lol. I've had more customers happier with a 7200 RPM drive then the WD green models and their 5400-5900 RPMs and the energy saving will will not be noticeable on you electric bill. The warranty on both is 2 years. The WD blue drives are more popular and out sell the green version by a very wide margin if you want to stay with WD.
