3 monitors on a Radeon HD 6950

Hi there,

I have a HD Radeon 6950 Graphics card and I'm trying to attach 3 monitors to it. The card I have has 2x DVI, 1x HDMI and 1x Display Port.

Currently I've got two monitors working, 1 via HDMI and 1 via DVI. Originally I tried attaching the third via the DVI but after doing some googling I found that the DVI port is shared (?) with the HDMI so only one of them will work.

This is fine because by googling I discovered that I can attach my third monitor through the display port. The monitor in question only has DVI and VGA on it, so I've ordered a Display port to DVI adapter however after further googling I read something about the adapter needing to be "active" rather than "passive", although the answers tend to be different in different places, some people have said that you only need active for eyefinity, which is not what I'm trying to do, I just want them connected as separate screens. My understanding of the adapter I've bought is that it just effectively converts the display port to a DVI port.

Is this going to work? I don't believe this is an active adapter, but does that matter for what I'm trying to achieve?

There are different types of DVI connections. Some of them are analog and some are digital so it depends on the connection your monitor has. I forgot which one is which but if you look it up its pretty easy to tell by looking at the pins. Display port is digital so if your monitor is analog then you need an active one and if it is digital than you can use a passive one. The one you ordered is active so if your monitor uses analog it will work. I don't know if it will work if it is digital but you could try and see.

Eyefinity is irrelevant and nothing is shared so any other 2 ports can be used. Those were just some common misconceptions spread around when people didn't understand the active dp requirement. It needs to be active dp for any monitors above 2. It's that simple. There are no other factors to take into account. So that adapter will not work.

@middlemarkal you can't have a passive dp to vga, that's digital to analog so unless you're master wizard, it's active.

@bob hays You will not find dvi-a anywhere so it's safe to say all dvi are digital, but some will have analog too. That's why it has the extra pins, for the analog signal, and it still has all the digital pins; it has both. Unfortunately this info doesn't help when he needs an active dp adapter per the limitations of the gpu.

This is the one I ended up ordering.

It's arrived, I've plugged it in but It's still not working and I have no idea why.

The monitors I'm using are a BenQ GL2450HM 24", a HP S2331a 22" and a Samsung 42" 1080p TV. BenQ is connected DVI to DVI graphics card to monitor, TV is HDMI to HDMI graphics card to monitor and HP is Displayport on graphics card to displayport to DVI adapter to DVI on monitor. The HP is the one that won't work.
Also worth mentioning that I've tried swapping the roles of the HP and the BenQ to see if that makes a difference, so the HP on DVI to DVI and the BenQ to DP to DP-DVI adapter to DVI monitor.
