I have an intel pentium D 940 processor. I have tried ms config then check the maximum memory changed it to maximum, 6k+mb but when i click apply after restart it goes back again to 1025mb. I unchecked itstill its 3.25 usable, any helpful tips? and im running on windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. and it says in crucial.com that my limit is 4k+mb how to exceed? and make it 6gb usable

Hi , I would suggest check your mainboard BIOS driver update list for support for larger capacity memory modules and upgrade BIOS if required.
Sometimes modules of greater capacity within the same model family are released after release of a mainboard and so max capacity is increased from spec of that originally published
I think for any chance of 4GB+...

Maybe your motherboard just doesn't support that much ram. Set msconfig to default settings. That might work.

If crucial said that you cannot exceed 4 gb, then sorry there is no way you can use 6 gb. I'm sorry but thats just how it works.

I think for any chance of 4GB+ support using ddr2 memory you need a mainboard with 4 memory slots - sounds like you only have 2 memory slots
Among the various computers I own includes a socket 775 workstation that officially supports total installed 8GB ddr2 ram memory , so some socket 775 chipsets / BIOS / mainboards do support total 8GB system memory
(I noticed your reference to cpu D940)
Crucial memory spec finder is probably a perfect guide but if you are a tinkerer........
