I just backed up the contents of 2 flash drives to a WD My Book. I assumed it would COPY the files but now both flash drives are empty AND the files are not showing up in MY Book. Where did they go? How can I get them back? (Retrieval just shows error message.) Finding out the hard way to NEVER trust ANYTHING made by WD.

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear about your difficulties. Let us try to figure out what happened – can you describe exactly how you backed up the files? Did you do it manually or via software ( WD SmartWare ? ) If WD SmartWare was used – what is the error message that shows up ? Here's a useful link on how to retrieve a backup using WD SmartWare:

http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3829/~/how-to-retrieve-a-backup-using-wd-smartware-version-1.6.x-and-earlier

If you provide detailed information about the computer you're using and a step-by-step description of what you did I'll do my best to help.

Waiting for your response, Citizen_WD

THANK YOU. I had the files on dvd, so they weren't completely lost. Just frustrating to lose so much time. I used WD SmartWare. There was no error message that I remember, just showed that flash drives were empty like files moved rather than copied. The files from the flash drive showed up on the WD drive after a reboot, and I was able to get them back. Greatly appreciate your help.

Was getting a cyclic redundancy error message earlier today when trying to drag/drop files into it. Now getting "cannot read from the source file or disk".

Hi again,

The  “cyclic redundancy error” message may be a symptom of a corrupt file system, as is the "cannot read from the source file or disk" . This usually happens if the drive has been disconnected during file transfer, for example if unexpected power shut down occurs, or if the drive cable was unplugged. There may be other causes of this as well, but I can only guess. You should backup your data before doing anything else. After that you may want to try running WD Data Lifeguard diagnostic tool : http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=810&sid=3&lang=en

Can you tell me what are the results from the tests?

If it shows errors you can than run CHKDSK /f , here's a link with info on this:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb491051.aspx

Let me know how that goes and if have other questions – feel free to ask.
