Hi all, i have a problem with my HDD 1 week ago i noticed that my system slows down sometimes but its not lasted long. But day by day that slow downs increased and yesterday it was horrible i can't even use my computer anymore. It has a %100 hard drive activity but nothing really uses the drive. So i formatted hard drive but nothing changed even when formatting i can see the red light that shows HDD activity is always on and so bright and format took so long. But today it get more slow and i waited at least 30 minutes Windows starting. And then today i deleted the disks again and formatting right not its been 40-60 minutes when i start formatting but its on %25. So its so slow and %100 activity even with no operating system. My hard drive is WD Caviar Black 500GB. Can someone help me?

I have no idea about old drive's specs but its too slow probably not performance oriented. So are you sure its dying?

Go to WD's website and download their data lifeguard diagnostic tool.
http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=613&lang=en

That will let you look at the SMART data for the drive, which will show if it's having problems. Not all drive failures come with the click of death. The clicking noise is common when the drive head can't accurately align to a data track. It sounds more like you've got some type of drive interface problem.

If SMART shows no problems, then the problem is probably your computer and not your drive. Actually it'll probably be easier to try moving the drive to a different computer or to another SATA port first and see if it still exhibits the same problem. If that doesn't work, then try the data lifeguard tool.

Its been more than an hour installing windows but its around %70. I think there's no bad sector but what the heck is that problem why would performance oriented hard drive slow down suddenly for no reason is it really dying? I can't be sure.

If you want to be sure..

Like solandri suggested.

Format the drive
Put it in another computer as secondary storage
Then, try to add large files to it.
Use wd tool to diagnose it
(it will probably report no errors), similar to what happened to mine

Basically just test the drive if it can still handle large file transfers using a different computer
