Monitor Goes Into Sleep Mode arbitrarily and doesn't come back online

Starting a couple weeks ago, my Gateway machine with Windows XP started exhibiting this behavior: I'd be logged in and working (internet surfing, or working on a spreadsheet or whatever), and all of the sudden the monitor would turn black and the monitor power light would start to blink (indicating the monitor is in sleep mode). And no matter what I do, it won't come back on. I need to do a computer hard reboot to get it working again.

I tried swapping out the monitor and it does the same behavior. I opened up the machine and vacuumed up the dust/cobwebs inside. I took out the video card and re-seated it. Nothing has helped. I don't have access to another video card to test if that is the issue. But I suspect that it is.

Does anyone have any advice on anything else I can do to try to hone in on the source of the issue? I've made no changes to anything in the setup of the machine recently, which makes me think it is definitely a hardware issue. Thanks in advance for your reply.

Power supply, video card or motherboard issue.

Check the capacitors on the motherboard make sure they are all flat and not puffy or have any black stuff on top. If they do, need to replace motherboard.

If that looks good, need to test another video card or power supply.
