I have an i5 750 paired with 8 gb ram and 2 gtx 550 ti in sli. Is it better for me to run games at 720p with settings on max or should I run them at 1080p with the settings on medium? What gives me better and smoother performance? Also would I be fine to just get 1 gtx 760 or do I need a new cpu or should I OC? I'm new to pc gaming and need advice. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

Typically, resolution impacts game performance less than intensive shader effects/antialiasing/etc. There's really no reason to ask someone what's better as there's no such thing, it's entirely up to you what look you prefer and what setup you feel provides the smoother experience

If you are looking to upgrade and you're on a budget, there's no need to move up from that i5 750 just yet, a simple overclock on it and then a GPU upgrade will suffice to make your build relevant again for modern games.

That is hard to say without sititng in front of you and looking at FPS and how the game looks. People also have different preferences, some like gaming at 1080p and are willing to sacrifice some quality, others want full quality and are willing to go to 720p. If you are really want to game at 1080p you need probably to:
1. upgrade your CPU
2. upgrade your GPU
3. Make sure your PSU can handle the upgrades
4. Make sure your monitor is good enough quality to make all these upgrades worth while. :)

In the end we can give you our own views on what is better for us, but you are the one playing the games and it is up to what you think looks better, both ways work just fine.
