I was wondering how much of an impact it would make if I upgraded my 8GB ram to a 16GB set with a better CAS latency. The RAM I have now was kind of a budget thing and I didn't see a need for gaming or anything but now I do a lot of editing and rendering in 4k, so I was wondering if 16GB would make a substantial difference. My rig was originally meant for gaming but I now use it more for editing, the specs are i7-4770k, Gigabyte z87 UD4H, GTX 770, 8GB ram, and a 512gb crucial mx500 (don't think the ssd makes a big impact on the editing, but if it does let me know).

Thanks,

Ghost.

those are the set I have in my computer, they give you the best of both world for gaming and rendering. the high MHz is good for rendering and the lower CAS is...

Actually, just because a stick of RAM is "faster" does not mean it will perform much better in the real word. you will not see a noticeable difference between 1600mhz and 2400mhz of RAM. Also, CAS latency is more important than speed as it is what shows the actual request time of RAM.

Going from 8GB to 16GB will make a difference in some editing software and some rendering situations. RAM speed will have little impact on renders. I purchased a set of Mushkin Reds 2133MHz C9. Can't tell if there is a difference over my Vengeance 1600MHz C10, but they were only $150 for 16GB and made in USA.

I would go for the Mushkin Redline. You will get higher theoretical performance than every reasonably priced RAM except the 2400MHz C10 but save $30.

The only reason I said to get 2400MHz CAS 11/10 was that he said he moved form gaming to editing rendering making higher MHz more appealing to him.
