CPU Temperature too high - 4790K with Noctua NH-DH15

Hi everyone!

So, just recently built a new PC and, after installing all the software etc, I decided to run some benchmarks. Ran Furmark for some 20min and temp was not higher than 75C and no errors / artifacts (970 Gigabyte G1 Gaming).

However, the CPU seems much too hot when I stress tested it. I started running Prime95 64bit on the "Blend" test. the temperatures hovered around 65ish for the first 10-15min. I presume this is fine. However, at some point Prime95 started running some different tests (I presume, since the Blend test goes through some different tests) and the temperatures jumped to mid to high-80s (max on each core was 84, 87, 88 and 82). At this point, I stopped Prime95 because it did not seem safe.

Case is NZXT H440 and the Noctua has both fans installed (rather than running single-fan mode) and the low-noise adapters are not installed ie running at full speed. I used the thermal paste ("grain of rice") that came with the cooler.

Can anyone please help me (a) verify that I am right in thinking that these temps are neither safe nor normal and (b) if so, what I should do to try and fix it.

Many thanks!!

Martin

Everything's perfect!
Mid 70s temperatures are great, and if you get that with small ffts, then your real temps when gaming or editing will be quite lower.
Also, that chips already comes with a high enough clock, so there's no need to overclock it further, as its performance is spectacular already.

Sorry, should have said - no it is stock. I realised I hadn't set the fan speeds in BIOS to performance or whatever ASUS call it (ie run at 100% when it hits around 65). Going to rerun, read the threads suggested and see if it helps. Thannks guys!

So, following the threads above I found this http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1800828/intel-temperature-guide.html

As instructed in that thread (section 11 I believe), I downloaded Prime95 26.6 instead and ran a small FFT test for around 10-15 min and got all cores hovering around 70 degrees (max temperatures 71, 72, 71, 67) on Real Temp. Also ran a Blend test for 10-15min and temps were in the mid-60s with that. Voltage, as per CPU-Z, was around 1.226.

Are these temps fine? I don't know if I ran it long enough though, but that is the time suggested in the thread above.

Basically, I am not particularly interested in overclocking and will use the PC for gaming mainly and some very light video-editing. As this is my very first PC build, I just wanted some reassurance that I haven't screwed anything up and that my CPU will die on me because it is not running cool enough.

Thanks again!

Thanks, that is reassuring! Will try to run some battlefield 4 / metro last light for a couple of hours with real temp in the background to see what temps I get :)

While the temperatures are absolutely safe, they are in no way normal given your cooler. My 30€ scythe mugen 4 cools to less than 80c on stock speed. You probably used too much thermal paste, so if you ever think about overclocking make sure to reseat it. You should get ~10-15c lower temperatures than you do now.
