Fixing a 32 Bit OS on a 64 Bit computer

While updating my HD to an SSD I discovered we were running a 32 bit OS on a 64 Bit processor. So, I decided to upgrade from Win 7 to Win 8.1. But every time I install 8.1 it gives me a 32 bit version.

So, I booted of the old drive, formatted the new drive, disconnected the old drive and booted from a USB to install win 8.1... Same thing.

Seems like somehow the install software is detecting the old 32 bit OS and not the 64 Bit processor. Can you help me to get the 64 bit OS on my 64 Bit PC?

Thanks,
Dan

Like the previous two users said. Operating Systems (Windows, Linux/Ubuntu, etc) have at least two different installers/dvds. One is for 32-Bit and the other is 64-Bit. From your description you are using a 32-Bit installer and expecting it to install a 64-bit version of the OS, which can't happen.

If you used the Windows 8 setup tool to automatically download the installation media it will download the media that matches the architecture of the current OS installation, not that which is best suited for the microprocessor. For example, if you have a 32-bit version of Windows 7 the setup tools will download the 32-bit version of Windows 8/8.1. To get around this, you will need to download and install a 64-bit version of Windows 7 (you can find these on Microsoft's Digital River repository) and repeat the process to get the 64-bit Windows 8/8.1 media.
