What should I upgrade first/next for most gaming bang for buck?

Have

z97 mobo socket 1150
i7-4770 (non K version)
8 GB RAM at 1600Mhz
512 GB HDD (IDE, old school HDD)
GTX 980 (non SLI)

Play at 1440p on 32" monitor.

Optimize for gaming pc

PSU and board are not listed but you need some better drives, 120-256GB SSD to start with

the 1TB ssd costs $700+, and 256 GB SSD at reasonable price yes, but I can't even install more than a few games before filling up such a small drive!

It improves startup and load times makes the system feel much snappier, then have modern 7200rpm storage drive. Even 120-28GB is plenty for OS programs and 1 or 2 games.

Do you mean a hybrid drive ssd+hdd combo?

No he means having SSD for OS and programs then a separate HDD for storing user files such as documents, movies and so on. As well you can install secondary programs and games on the storage drive.

The hybrid (combo) drives are an interim solution at best. Somewhat faster than a regular HDD, but not nearly as fast as a regular SSD.

A 1TB SSD? Only if I had a really big budget, and I wanted a single drive, and if everything I needed fit within 1TB.

Since that does not fit my requirements, I would not.
