Hi.

I'm looking for a NAS (4-bay) for:

- Storage (family photos, movies, general files)
- Multimedia (HDMI, DLNA, etc.) - to watch movies from the NAS on my Samsung SmartTV
- Backups
- Personal Webserver
- Private cloud
- Virtualization (if possible)

The storage, multimedia and webserver are the most important points.

After some search, and comparison of many NAS out there my choice is the QNAP TS-453pro, mostly for the Intel Celeron Quad Core and the 2 or 4GB of RAM expandable to 8GB.
The TS-451 is a good choice also, but the price difference is not so much and the Quad Core would be a better option against the Celeron Dual Core.

The product page:

What do you think? Its a good choice? Do you recommend anything better?

I've found the TS-453pro for about 560€ which is a good price in my opinion.
My dream was the TS-470pro (Intel i3 with 16GB RAM), but its too expensive for me (about 1000€).

There is also the new Asustor AS7004T. Can't see it anywhere and don't have a price also, but I think it might be at the same price range as the TS-470pro (or maybe a bit cheaper) since it also has an Intel Core i3.

Yes, I think it's a very reliable solution. I also like Synology NAS but they don't have nothing for my requirements. Most of their options don't allow to upgrade RAM, so they are very limitative for the same price has the QNAP ones.

The new NAS from ASUSTOR could be a great option, but I need to wait for prices, since it is not available yet. But probably it will have a price near the QNAP TS-470pro.

I have both Qnap TS453 Pro and a few Synology Nas units. Qnap was a good product to start but their UI was a little lacking until their later releases which are much much better. Synolgy nas units work great and have a lot of functionality and all have been tried an true. The one issue on qnap that i am looking at is expansion ability on qnap, Synology has Sata Expansion cabinets and I am trying to findout what QNAP's connectivity is and its thru-put on expansion units is.

Once I get Qnap answers I will post and report on expansion performance if I go that route. I can say Synology expansion is Solid and easy, using Sata port.
on some Synologies its an option.

If I had to chose between the 2 companies Synology still has bit of an edge. Expansion,Apps supported, Remote file system management and a few other areas are easier on Synology, Boot Speed on Qnap is rather slow to boot. Both reliable equipment.

Crow,
IF your looking at setting up a Multi-media nas, Qnap & Synology both offer great solutions, you should look at PLEX App for your multi-media needs the server software is free but you can purchase license to allow you to share with others and also allow you to watch movies and stuff on your pda/phone/xbox/playstatsions and stuff the software is solid and stable. it would require you RIP your movies to a standard format as it doesn't currently support iso files.

I have both types of units and also IOMEGA nas gear used as network drives only) Server software for PLex you want to make sure you get good nas I would suggest Intel processor on it for best performance some of the other chipsets have limitations on what plex can support if processor is to slow transcoding isn't possible or is painfully slow. I have a DS513+ (current model is DS515+) I also have QNAP 453-PRO both do great with multi-media services and Plex runs great on them. I have average of 10-20 devices streaming media at peak time and both servers work flawlessly.

There are lots of choices out there, but if your going down this rabbit hole, the make sure you have options to expand if needed. IOmega, didn't have options to expand disks or add disks to array, Qnap looks like they do USB expansion (which isn't the fastest) Synology offers SATA expansions on most base units they offer, which gives you a good growth path if you need more disk drives or want to expand abilities.
