Hi everybody,

I'm upgrading my graphics card. At the moment I have:

Processor: AMD FX(tm)-6100 Six core processor, 3.30 GHz
Motherboard: Gigabyte ga-970a-ds3
GPU: GTX 660

I would like to upgrade to the 'MSI GTX 970 GAMING Twin Frozr V 4GB GDDR5 Dual DVI HDMI DisplayPort PCI-E Graphics Card'

I was wondering whether anybody knew if it would be compatible?

Thank you.

That's unfortunate, especially since I'm on a budget and I was hoping not to have to spend more.

I don't know much about PC specs and how all the hardware works together. Do I need to upgrade both my motherboard and CPU?

If so, please could you recommend any CPU or motherboards? I'm on a budget and I really don't want to have to spend more than £100 on hardware.

Thank you for the reply.

FX 8 would be nice, but your MoBo isn't good enough, FX 6300 would be good too, but it's not worth upgrading from FX 6100. That's tight. Still, you can keep your config intact and just grab the 970, and tolerate some bottlenecks (you might need to down the settings from max to ultra, or high, that's it), then upgrade altogether in the future.

Thanks a lot for the replies. Last question if I may.

In the future I should probably buy a AMD FX-8350? Also, do you have a recommendation for a motherboard. Something within £130?

I'm sorry but Intel i5 currently has better performance (even better value/money) than FX 8. You can compare a locked i5 and OCed FX 8, and still find i5 pulls ahead in almost any game. Besides, it's more upgradable (to say, i7 or Xeon) and doesn't require af cooling (unless you plan to OC with an unlocked CPU). The MoBos are relatively cheaper too, for Intel. You can get a SLI capable one withing 100 quids. So all in all, I'd highly recommend Intel right now, AM3+ platform is pretty much dead (it's a 3 year old platform).
