I have just bought an HP Pavilion 500 and want to upgrade from my current GPU, an R7 240 (Dual Graphics with an 8570G). My CPU is an A8 6500. I'm looking at getting an R7 265. I've already upgraded to 10 gig of RAM.

The weird thing is, everywhere I look my PSU seems to be 180 watt. The manufacturer's website and the label on the PSU seem to say this. This seems far too low to support even my current spec - surely this is wrong?

My question is, do I need to upgrade my power supply to support an R7 265? If so, what would you recommend me getting? I'm on a fairly tight budget.

This is my PC's support page: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c04341331&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=7233280#N1501

Thanks for any help.

Will this do the job? CoolerMaster's a good brand right? How do I find out for sure whether my model supports upgrades? I know I have a PCI-E slot and plenty of space, but I've never heard of certain brands completely rejecting upgrades before.

what ever you feels best scroll down this add read the ones that got new cards and they work fine or the ones that cant get them to work and solved the issue-- I'm not telling you all this to piss you off but to better inform you before you spend. but like me unless you try to see for your self you really don't know ..

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/all.html?refine=hp+new+graphics+card

all the psu in the world cant help if the pci-e slot is regulated to a point so if hp got it set to only put out lets say 45w and the card needs the full 75w it wount matter if you put in a best there is 10,000w psu the slot is still set to 45w and your still 30w below what the card needs

now its hard for me to believe all these prebuilt guys [hp-acer-dell- so on] get cards they cant get to work is due to they all got bad cards and just so happen to have a prebuilt ???

just spend the cash and see for your self 2 ways it can go as it it will work or it will not then you move on from there

I dug this up from way back with a guy like you and heres what he reported back with his [acer]

''Yeah I took it to an expert, the card wasn't the problem. neither were the other five we tried. You were right about acer locking the BIOS. I'm done. I have a ticket with Acer ATM and I am possibly just going to buy a new PC. I'm sick of acer's BS. This isn't the first time they've Fudged me.''

Thank you junkeymonkey for the help.

now you can do that and if they cant get the card you want to work then you free and clear and out nothing .. if they do and stand behind it just pay the guy

There's nothing about my machine especially. One of its official selling points is that it's 'upgradeable' so I think I'll trust it and just go for it.

Back to my main question though - can I really have a 180 watt PSU at the moment? I know APUs are meant to be power-saving, but I didn't realise it could go that low. What's the sure-fire way of finding out what I've got?

ok good luck

i'll point this out and I hope I'm wrong but under the pard of upgrade gup it states for the allowed cards hp has for a upgrade

•Total power consumption: ~50 W (single slot)

so like I said on this don't be surprised when you install that new card you want that requires the full 75w it will not get it cause hp got the slot limited to that 50w for the cards they have for you to upgrade to .. but hat lets hope I'm still wrong

I ordered a 500W PSU and ended up getting a 600W one (80+!) for £35, which I wasn't going to complain about... I ended up getting an R9 270x with no compatibility problems at all...
