Ok so I Just got me an MSI z97 gaming 7 mother board and an i5 4690k and put my rig together and all. Did all the usual test p95, cinebench ect it is stable as can be. So I am like ok now lets get in to some OC...

But before I talk about that experience I must tell my back ground in over clocking(you will see why in a bit.) My previous settup was an Asrock 990fx and an fx8320 and the way I would over clock that one was bump up the multiplier until it was no longer stable and then bump up the voltage a bit and try again (simple right.)

Ok back to the MSI/intel OC, I turn off turbo and then change my multiplier to 40 and do not even look at the voltage because I thought that intel/msi would be the same as the Asrock/AMD and have a fixed voltage so I go to doing my testing and everything is great. Then I decide to bump it up to 4.2 and then 4.4 both again never touching the voltage.

Then I decide to jump on the internet and look at what people are setting 4690ks to on average and seen a lot of 4.6 talk and what voltages. So I go and adjust the voltage for the first time and see auto next to the voltage....At this point I am thinking to my self I probably shouldn't have left it at auto and I put my voltage at 1.25v which is were every were kept saying is a good spot to try.
At this point I cant get past the windows logo with out blue screening. Then I simply back down my multiplier back down to 4.5. Still again BSOD right out of the gate. so I go back to 4.4 (since that was the highest stable I got) and again BSOD.

So now I go back to auto for the voltage and everything was fine again. This is were I start thinking well what voltage am I really running at(thinking maybe that auto setting was cranking the voltage way up)? I look on CPU-Z while under load and it would be 1.176v so knowing it wasn't really cranking my voltage up really high I figured I would try 4.6ghz with auto...BSOD. So I backed it back down to 4.5ghz and it has been solid as a rock.

All of that was to ask is it safe to leave it on "auto" for the voltage? And knowing the info you now know would anyone have any in site as to what I could do to maybe squeak a little more out?

also for temperatures I am not running any higher than 65c under load.

if anymore info is needed please ask and I will answer.

yeah It is rock solid since yesterday when I settled on 4.5ghz. I mean I would love to maybe get a little more out of it but then again who am I to complain when I did get a whole 1ghz past stock when there are some that may not be able to get it even that high.
