Here are the relevant specifications:
Motherboard: ga-970a-ds3p
RAM: G.Skill Sniper 8 GB (2 x 4 GB)
CPU: AMD FX 6300
OS: Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit

The BIOS detects all the 8 GB correctly however Ubuntu only detects 4 GB of RAM. Memtest86 does not show any memory problems and each memory module works fine(-ish) on it's own so the problem does not seem to be defective RAM. After asking this same question on the Ubuntu forums it was pointed ot that my motherboard is not supported by the memory. is there a way to make it work without buying a new motherboard or RAM?

Are you running the DRAM at 1866? If so may want to raise DRAM voltage to 1.56 and CPU/NB voltage to 1.2 and try.....Also try an individual stick in both slots 1 and 3 individually and see if both boot/run OK...If OK in one slot and not the other, might try loosening the CPU cooler then snugging it back down, if too tight in one corner or side, the pins may not be making full contact which can throw the MC (memory controller) off

I've tried pluging the CPU fan out and in again and it works so far. I going to test it for a few more days before I celebrate victory. The irony is that I actually held of on installing an aftemarket CPU fan for months because I thought that I would have to take it off again to replace the memory due to this problem :D. Of all the parts in my computer I would have certainly not explected the CPU cooler to cause this issue.
