Hi,

My CPU idles at about 30C

Opening an internet browser can see it jump to about 50C

On full load it gone as high as 87C and sometimes bluescreens

Is this right or wrong?

it's a 4770K Oc'd to 4.3ghz

H80i cooler

It would certainly seem to be, yes. It's good to know though that your VCORE isn't really that high. Given that I can find nothing wrong on any of the screenshots I would have to agree with a previous poster who advised you to take off the cooler, clean off the old thermal paste and apply a new layer. I would personally recommend using Arctic MX-4, which is what I use in all my builds including my wife's rig and my current rig. If you aren't happy doing that, then I suggest finding a nearby store who can, though replacing it yourself is very easy.

Might I also ask how many fans you have on the radiator, the positioning of the radiator inside the case, the make and model...

Thanks for the quick reply,

The computer was custom built a little over a year ago

I'm sure everything was done right on their behalf (PC Specialist)

Everything has been fine up until maybe a week ago

I'll have a tinker with it tomorrow and see what I can do.

it's up to 88C now :S

When I stop the stress test it instantly drops to 30-40C again.

Well there is your issue. Your VCORE is a bleep huge 1.8V. That chip is rated for around 1.3V. It's no wonder the bleep thing is overheating. Did you set up this overclock, or did the company you bought it from? Either way you need to go in to the BIOS and lower your VCORE to around 1.3V before that CPU burns itself out.

managed to lower the VCORE... time to do some testing.

-------------------------
TESTED

dropping the VCORE down to 1.3 causes windows to bluescreen on boot... resetting all settings to default ups the voltage to 1.8 again...

Might I also ask how many fans you have on the radiator, the positioning of the radiator inside the case, the make and model of the case and the location and ambient temperature that the case is located in. Perhaps something there will help shed light on why you have such oddly high temps. Also, my apologies to the moderator who had to remove the swear word from my last post, I'll make sure that doesn't happen again.

I'll have to wait until tomorrow to get some new paste, as for now I'm going to check which way my fans are spinning, got a sneaky suspicion that if I reverse the H80i fans then something might improve...

The case is a Fractal Define R4

I have two fans on the radiator positioned to the rear of the case FAN|RAD|FAN - they should be blowing out... but I'm going to double check that now.

The side SP120 is blowing in and the top SP120 is blowing out.

The front stock fan is blowing in.

The computer is positioned under a large desk, lots of room on each side of it.

Not sure on ambient temperature but it's winter, it's freezing outside and I never have the heating on - my nose is cold :)

No, the temperatures don't really drop that fast. If they did, thermal differentials would cause things to literally break. Try using RealTemp, found here: http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/ to monitor your temps as it seems to do a better job of reading them properly when compared to HWmon. If that shows the temps bouncing all over the place, then it could be an issue with the motherboard or the CPU. What is the exact model of motherboard?

I did literally 2 minutes of checking on that motherboard and found dozens of people all saying the exact same thing about that motherboard. The prominent cause seems to be that the motherboards temperature sensors are complete garbage and have a fairly consistent tendency to fail. My advice would be to remove the overclock to try and keep temps down, and then contact the company that built it to inform them of the problem. Request a replacement motherboard from a different brand.

A new thermal paste seems to have fixed the problem :)

Idling at 30c

The CPU test hovers around 48c

The FPU test maxes at 75c

Heaven Benchmark (ultra settings) at 65c (used to be 85c)

Thanks for all your help :)

Glad to see everything has been resolved, nicely done :)
