hey for Christmas and my birthday im getting a new pc i am going to build it myself so i have been looking at parts but im not really sure what im looking at, the pc will be used for gaming and some video editing, this is what i have so far- http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/ysjnjX

i would prefer to keep the build under around £1300 excluding OS, mouse, keyboard and monitor.
this will be the first time i build a pc so any tips would be appreciated, also i was wondering about overclocking, would i need a better cooling system is it difficult or damaging to the pc, i have read
that this particular cpu can comfortably go up to GHz.

Solution
also in editing you wont notice a HUGE difference, unless you are talking about actual movies ofcourse ;)
if it's just putting some gameplay video's together i'd do what clutchc said

seeing as you will also be doing video edditing you made some good choises with that CPU and RAM. an I7 4470k and even an i5 4690k with a z87/z97 mobo and DDR3 memory will do a good job aswell for a lower price. so you may want to look into that if you arent a very serious video editer.

and take a better PSU. that PSU uses cheap components.
xfx, seasonic and evga make good quality units. more info about that you can find here: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1804779/power-supply-unit-tier-list.html

*edit* there are other good brands aswell, corsair itself has some good series aswell. that's why I linked the other htread so you can have a look yourself

The build looks generally good, although I would get a higher efficiency power supply (e.g. 80plus gold) with your budget. For overclocking, what you have would work, but again, at your budget, I would recommend a higher end CPU cooler, like a corsair h100i or any other all in one liquid cooler. As long as you go steadily, overclocking will not harm your pc.

you went a bit overboard there with the RAM. http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/gskill-memory-f317000cl9q16gbzh
it's cheaper and there wont be any noticable difference.
and I have no idea how much you can overclock with a i5 4690k.
it also depends on the chip itself, some are better then others. it's a random "draw"
as for the gtx 970, it's the same as the i5, it depends on your chip but you should be able to add 150MHz to the clockspeed and a good 250MHz to the memory clock speed

yeah after looking at it a bit more the ram seems excessive, i was listening to somebody who said overclocking is the silicone lottery :/

exactly. it's all about luck. you will be able to overclock non the less, but no idea about the max overclock. you can hawever google how much ppl are getting out of there i5 4690k so you'll have a basic idea

after about 2 seconds i found a tomshardware forum discussing it with that exact cpu and mother board they said they can safely get it up to 4.4 and some got it up to 4.8. which i assume would also be overkill for my needs, btw you have been super useful thanks :D
