Im trying to use an old laptop HDD with my desktop via an IDE to USB adapter. I've been using this drive for years and I've never had a problem with it. So here's my problem. When I plug the drive into my computer it is detected properly and shows up in Disk Manager and My Computer. I can browse the file tree with no problem, I can also copy files from the drive to my computer. But as soon as I try and change the content of the drive (delete or add a file) the LED indicator on the adapter goes dark and the adding/deleting process eventually times out. At this point the drive is no longer detected by the computer, the drive LED is out BUT the disk remains spinning. I am at a loss.
I am using Windows 7 64-bit. heres a list of things I've already tried/checked:

  • Turning the computer off and back on again (didn't help)
using drive in another USB port (didn't help)
using the drive on another computer (works fine on different computers)
using a different drive in the same port (works fine)
    uninstalling USB driver (didn't help)
Used Ubuntu live DVD on desktop to see if it could read the drive (worked fine)
Used on various operating systems. (Works fine on other Win7, Win8, Ubuntu 14.04 and 11.04 machines)
I have done everything that I could think of and I am at a loss. Any help is apreciated.

Solution
In all honesty, give up. It's an old disk. Copy everything off it to a new disk and use the new disk.

It's not worth the risk of depending on a disk that's started acting funny. And an IDE disk would be fairly old.
