i will try to recall as many variables as i can that may play a role in my computers inability to format a hard drive that was working fine prior to using dban harddrive software.

while in the bios the pc still sees the harddrive. based on what i read the reason why windows does not see it is because it is not formatted. so i have been trying to format >.< the usb drive that i used to place win7 ultimate on the pc successfully i deleted to use with dban. i than added the os back on in what i thought was the same manor.

i am able to boot from the usb drive. it allows me to pick language and also click the install windows option i think it is. but than i get an error prompt talking about needed cd/dvd driver and saying it is okay to take the os out of the cd drive if i am using it to add the correct driver so we can continue =/

this is a new step and i do not have the asus dvd drive drivers(i put the cd the dvd player with in but windows did not recognize a driver on it).

my goal, if possible, i want to format this harddrive without putting an os on it; is this even possible?

all the cd versions of windows i have access to are 32 bit and i still tried it but seems like it does not work as it skips the install and just boots the function os.

i will continue to look into solutions my problem but if you can help me that would be appreciated.

thank you for your time.

i found the same response when watching a video and that was the issue. i was using the usb 3.0 but when i first installed the os they were only usb 2.0 untill i loaded the drivers making them 3.0 is my guess.

is there any way to not put an os on a hard drive? i just want to formate not put a whole os on it?

i pulled out of the process to come here and mention it works now and to ask the aformentioned question.

thank you for your help thus far.

Multiple ways to wipe a drive without putting an OS on it.
Download an create a boot CD of Hirens BootCD
http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/

DBAN
http://www.dban.org/

Burn that to a CD, boot from it, wipe the drive.

You could do it with the Windows install disk, but that is a clunkier operation.

thank for staying with me for the time being. i have already done that step with the dban tool. i am now trying to get windows to see the hard drive again. i think i need to format the wiped hard drive, right? i would like to do this step while preserving the most free space. it seemed when i just tried that i need to put an os on that drive. if possible i do not want to do this. what is the lightest process to use so that windows can see this hard drive again as a storage device>

If it has already been wiped, and you have the OS on a different drive:
Connect it.
Boot up
Look in the BIOS to see if it is recognized
If so, continue booting
Get into Disk Management
It will probably say 'Unallocated'. You should be able to format it from there and use as a secondary drive.

thank you good sir! i am all squared away now. thank you sharing your knowledge and experience, thus helping me with what many would call, "trivial problems". i suspect i would have eventually figured out my problems at the expense of more time than what we just used.

carry on good sir and live long and prosper!
