Is it possible to point a desktop from a WIndows 7x64 Pro to a directory in a Windows 2003 x32 Server?

i have a few xp x32 machines that are part of a windows server 2003 domain and the desktop points to the users /profile/user/desktop directory on the server.

any help is greatly appreciated.

I have added machines but there were was already a couple 64 bit machines on the domain.

From what I researched, most people add a 64bit machine just fine, you would run into issues with 64bit print drivers, and a small amount of users have issues with v2 profiles and getting proper GP permissions.

do you know if there are any compatibility issues when adding a x64 machine to windows x32 server?

i would like to have the actual desktop from the win7x64 machine point to that users profile/desktop/ directory in the windows server 2003. for example if a user wants a file, i can drop the file right on their desktop by copying that file into the windows server 2003 in the profile/desktop/ directory.

No there is no compatibiliy issues of adding an x64 client to an x32 domain server.

This is not really the common way to do file shares as desktops are part of the user profile files and are generally locked from other users.

The typical way to do this is to create a shared folder somewhere else on the server, and then give permissions to that share to the accounts that need access (or using groups is better if it is more then just a couple of people). Then in a file explore window you would enter \\ComputerName\ShareName to access the share from the other computers, you can also create a shortcut to this on the desktop or map as a network drive in my computer.

i understand, i normally map network drives for directories the user has access to. the tech who installed the 2003 server, created a user within AD and a directory for them; //user/profile/desktop. the desktop path was pointed to //user/profile/desktop within the registry. can i do this using a win7x64 machine?

preferably i would like to have them join the 2003 domain to inherit the group policies/permission. and that why, as you mentioned, they would have their own directory within the 2003 server. but i remember reading some links a few weeks ago about compatibility issues when adding a x64 machine on a x32 domain. i believe there were some microsoft packages required to be installed on the 2003 server. have you added x64 machines to a x32 domain in the past?
