I am looking for advice on what to do with setting up a wifi network in my sisters new house. As of right now the equipment is being rented per month and with the modem/router and extender combo it is $13 per month.

Here is how the set up is now:

Arris DG1670A modem/router combo on one side of the house
Actiontec WCB3000N extender on the other side of the house with coax cable coming in

I was thinking about getting the SURFboard SBG6580 then running an ethernet cable through the walls to the other side of the house and just set up an AP. There won't be any devices hooked up via ethernet in the house. All devices will be running off of Wifi. What I am looking for is the best option that will run the smoothest because there won't be any tech savvy people around to fix it if something goes wrong.

So is the best option to buy the SBG6580 and an AP and set it up like that? Also I want to get an AP that has the best range that I won't have to upgrade for about a year or so. Suggestions?

What you need to do is simply bridge your network because it seems the house is quite large. So on one side of the house will be your modem (you should buy one instead of renting) which is connected to your main router. Then, as you said, run ethernet through the wall to a second router which will be an access point so wireless devices on the other side can get a signal. That's all. No need for switches or anything fancy, just a bridge.

For modem get either the motorola sb6141 or zoom 5341J. Both of these modems support bonded channels (up to 8) for over 100mbps speed and both of them are supported on tw, comcast, cox, and i believe charter.

You are correct to have one primary router and another router set as an access point. Most ASUS and Buffalo routers already have a vendor version of DD-WRT on them and then can easily be flashed to a standard version of dd-wrt if you need additional features.
As far as which routers that depends on your budget and your needs. Do you want to do wireless AC, Dual Band N????

The SBG6580 is a combo modem/router in one and as for the other router what would you recommend getting? I'm looking for wireless AC

Would the motorola SBG6580 modem/router combo be ok? and as for the other router budget isn't really a problem. I would just rather have maximum range and have it last about a year before i will have to upgrade

I would advise getting one of the mentioned modems and a sperate router.
Combo devices never have as much features or as good of radios in them as standalone devices. Not to mention if one part breakes you have to replace it all, while if say something in the modem broke, you only have to shell out $60-70 for a new modem.

What kind of budget are you looking at, you can get $70 AC routers all the way up to $300 routers.

Frankly if you are planing on upgrading everything in a year I would not bother with wireless AC. Unless you have all new iphones or samsung notes and all new laptops then none of your devices even have wireless AC.

If you want to do AC now then I would look at ASUS model rouers, they are pretty stable and have DD-WRT out of the box.

Most of the devices that will be connected will be new devices. is there something new coming out in a year or so? would you recommend getting a nice dual band n? i'm looking to spend around $200 for the router
