I have 8GB RAM but i can't even use 2GB of it for minecraft

I have 8GB RAM however when i try and allocate more than 1GB in the java arguments, it says that it couldn't reserve the heap space. It feels as though something is locking of access to my RAM

I've installed the 64-bit java and i can now allocate more RAM, ive now got another problem. When i am in minecraft, the rate that it uses up the memory is just absurd. It goes from about 200mb to 1000mb in about 3 seconds. From my previous experiences of minecraft, it should not use the memory that fast. I have a i5 4690k and a 2gb GTX 770.

I had the same issue but if your computer runs on 64-bit processor, get the Java desktop 64-bit and it will run well. It's gonna use memory. It's based on the game contents.
