Hey! I currently got the radeon r9 280x and got on a really good offer yet i am a big fan of nvidia for some reason and i am considering if the GTX 970 would be good enough or just keep What i got now?

Solution

Gtx 970 would be minimum 40% better performer than the R9 280x so if you can afford the gtx 970 then definitely go for it.

Depends, what are you really playing right now? If you're playing a lot of the newer games like Watch_Doges, AssGreedUnity, CoD: KevinSpacey Warfare, and the likes of those and want to play games like GTA5, The Witcher 3 and etc then the jump from the R9-280X to the GTX 970 is WORTH IT. You will see anywhere from a 5 to 30 FPS jump in performance.

Now if your cup of tea is like WoW, Hearthstone, CS:GO, Diablo III, Starcraft 2, etc that are a) Slightly older or b) slightly lower in requirements then hold off. For games like those the R9-280X is still fine and it might be better to wait till next year to see if nvidia rolls out a new line or Ti's everything.

Well currently i am playing a fair bit of WoW and also Fifa. I was hoping to get back into alot more gaming and since ACunity, FarCry4 & CoD is coming / is out i thought it would be a nice time to start

I am wondering though if getting a second r9 280x would be better or worse? anyone know?

and thank you for your answers :)

Hmmmmm... but would a second 280x be good enough to run the different things?, i was kind of hoping to save as much as possible since im still in school and was looking to get a new pc here in like 1½ year or something as the budget isnt the largest ... it just read somewhere though that ideal RAM for the 970 is 12gbs and would then have to get 2 more sticks then :(

If you don't have that much money then, "YES" the R9-280X can last a year and a half, but for the UbiLazySoft games, you'll have to lower your settings. You do and surpass the minimum requirements to run the game, but you miss the recommended by just a bit. If you're just gonna get a new computer in 1.5 years then just go with the R9 280X.

Also ya, don't bother SLI-ing something that's only temporary. And at least you get 3 free games when you buy the AMD card?

I heard the 960 is coming in the next few months, it might be worth waiting for.

The Nvidia 970 in performance is a lot closer to the R9 290x but because of heat alone, I'd choose the 970 over the 290x. It runs cooler for longer periods of time. With the newer cards in general, they've been able to take the high heat of game processing (from games like BF 3 & 4). But heat will slow the frame rate down. And if you're playing fps games with a huge map with tanks, planes, missiles, bullets let alone the mayhem of 64 guys going mad, getting slower is not something you'd want.
