Hey guys. Like the title says, I'll be attempting to re-apply thermal paste soon. Having never done it before, I'm a little nervous. I bought this PC second-hand. It was custom-built in 2011 or 2012, and the CPU is overclocked. From the beginning, the CPU would overheat on rare occasion, but over the past year it has become more frequent. Since installing a new GPU, it will always reach the 70's-high 80's range when playing most games for a while. If I don't stop, it will reach 90 and shut down.
After some Googling, it seems pretty likely that re-application of thermal paste would help. I'm not a total newbie to hardware, but I've never done anything CPU-related before. I've watched tutorials on how to remove the heatsink, remove old paste and apply new, etc, but I'm not exactly feeling confident. What are some things to watch out for? What are the chances of me causing damage to the CPU?
Thanks in advance for any help.
