my current config is

XFX Radeon HD 6870 1 GB DDR5 Graphics Card X 2 (crossfire)

Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz 8M L3 Cache LGA1366 Desktop Processor

ASUS LGA 1366 - Intel X58 - True USB 3.0 & SATA 6Gb/s - ATX Motherboard P6X58D-E (PCIe2.0 x1 slot and PCI x 2 slot)

Corsair 12 GB PC3-12800 1600MHz 240-Pin DDR3 Core i7 Triple Channel Memory Kit

Now i want to upgrade my graphic cards with gtx 980 or 970 in SLI, i am confused whether my old processor and motherboard will hamper the graphics quality of games. i like to play all games in high settings. games like skyrim, battlefield, COD, Farcry series.

Solution
I have that EXACT motherboard in my system. I have an i7-920 CPU (so, older and slower than yours).
- ran Sapphire 5870's CF (5 years ago)
- upgraded to 7970, nearly twice as fast (2 years ago)
- upgraded to CF 7970's scaled up beatifully (1 year ago)
- Tried an AMD 295x2, nearly twice as fast again (WAY over kill for 1080P, so, I upgraded to 1440P still crushes any game)
- FINALLY settled on STRIX GTX 970's in SLI (trades blows with the 295x2 in performance quieter and less heat with NVidia setup) (last Month)

So, NO you CPU won't bottle neck you system.

Bottom line, I'd go with a Single GTX 980 plenty of power for 1080P....................

single gpu might not give the performence i am used to...i mean right now also i am using crossfire, i dont care about anti alaising but i need highest texture and other effects

at 1080p a single 980 will be perfectly fine, if you find not then get another, but no point getting two to start with.
