I am helping a friend build a computer for gaming, I have already built a computer but I think its always good to get a second opinion on anything.

Your config works but is sadly missing an SSD. They don't cost that much anymore but greatly improve performance.

Yes they will all work together just fine, just for gaming perhaps a i5-4690 to save a bit of cash maybe...and I think the H97 boards are the same price as the H87, just a thought..

The fastest memory supported on a H motherboard is 1600mhz. If you want faster memory I would suggest a Z97 but since your not getting a unlocked K cpu I would say get 1600mhz and a H97 motherboard.

Personally I'd go with 4790 in the case you want to go SLI one day.

But an SSD will give much more performance than the difference between 4690 and 4790

Well an i5 generally does fine for gaming but it is trending for new games to use Hyper Threading.

The i5 is around $100 cheaper than the i7, I don't think the 4690 will hamper you in any way playing any game any time soon, I would say for a very long time. You could use that money to add an SSD, perhaps an MX100 that is going for a great price per GB, you can get a 512GB for around $100.

Yup, the i7 only introduces hyperthreading and the i5-4690 will definitely do fine in terms of gaming.
