Solution
Having experienced this issue with an ASUS GTX650 in a different system, I think that your graphics settings may be too high for the card. I 'fixed' this issue with the GTX650 by turning down my video settings in BF3. Since doing that I have had no further issues.

Now with a new system that came with a XFX r9 270 pre-installed, I am having similar issues. The more I turn down the in-game video settings the less frequent this happens.

Only problem is that the ASUS Nvidia card came with their GPU tweak software that is actually very handy and informative. This did not come with such software.

I will continue to slowly decrease my game settings, confident that will correct the problem. If that fails I will return to update this...

Since the time of my original post I have encountered this error several times more. AMD has been NO HELP!

Ensure that you have the LATEST driver version installed. It is now 14.12 / 14.5. Follow the download / installation instructions EXACTLY!

I am not sure what OS you are using. If it is 8.0 or 8.1 please make sure the compatibility mode is set properly (to 8.0 or 8.1). My download installed as Vista service pack 2.

I have serious doubts about your card being 'bad'. It is most likely the driver, a setting, a software conflict or a combination of all the above.

I rarely encounter this problem, but it does still happen. Most frequently soon AFTER a period of intense gaming.

I have installed another card R9 270 and experienced same errors. I installed an NVIDIA GTX970 with no issues. I re-installed the R9 270 because when it does work I actually like the screen appearance better. Go figure.... I am continuing to try to solve this problem as I await AMD's release of a driver update. They wonder why NVIDIA is the gamer's card of choice...? I would be happy to explain....
