Hyello!

I have this ~4 years old crappy Western digital HDD as a storage for my games and movies. lately it has been having more often that loading sound (that "ticking" sound) and defragmenting it takes forever a lot longer than before. games load more slowly too (i think). it's only 25% full (248gb used of 1TB).

are these all signs that the HDD is about to die, if so... could you give me suggestions of a good quality HDD 500GB - 1TB, for games and movies (I have my windows on an SSD so i only need a HDD for storage). i'm willing to pay for "high-end" since all my other components are high end.

Thx in advance.

Yeah that's why it's known as the "ticking sound of death", which must be the cause raising that "warning" signal in the SMART info, so backup data while you can.

Personally I've always preferred Seagate HDDs, as for the WD their black series are supposed to be real good too.

I would suggest you get Speccy to read SMART data off the drive. https://www.piriform.com/speccy I don't know if the old drive will be able to communicate SMART information. From what you say though the drive is on the way out.

In terms of a good backup drive, I would simply suggest going on Amazon and finding one. You can get 2Tb for a good price, and WDs are usually great :) http://www.amazon.com/Book-USB-Hard-Drive-Backup/dp/B00E3RH5W2/
