Is ram the reason why my games are lagging or is it my overall system?

this question may be pretty long.
I was wondering if the reason that my games are very laggy is because of the amount of ram i have or just because the overall system isnt good enough.
pc specs:
intel core i3 4130
EVGA nvidia geforce GTX 750ti 2gb
4gb ram
1tb hard drive
windows 8.1
im planing on getting a cache ssd drive and upgrading to 16gb of ram but i was wondering if ram is the problem or if its something else.

thank you

I understand what he's saying, that's what i'm saying too,the o.p. is using a gtx 750 ti which just isn't as good as that gtx 680 used in that video and will imo hardly be bottleneckt by that speedy dualcore with hyper threading.
He also talks about a system being in balance and the gtx 750 ti with an i3 is imo in balance.
I even think that the i3 can handle a better gpu which is why i'm saying in a earlier post that the gpu is probably the bottleneck here.

It's your overall system.

Firstly I would upgrade your CPU to an i5 3470 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115234&cm_re=i5_3470-_-19-115-234-_-Product

It also doesn't hurt to upgrade to 8gb's of ram. I would highly recommend this ram. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231460&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-PC&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-PC-_-pla-_-Desktop+Memory-_-N82E16820231460&gclid=CMrpsKL368ECFQcSMwodmDQAFg

This should get you running most games at High settings, in the future, I would upgrade your graphics card, and your set to go.
Hope this helped!

I don't think that upgrading that cpu is going to make a huge difference,it's not the bottleneck when gaming. The gpu is more likely to be that.

Look at the 1080p results and you'll see what i mean.

Try first to add 4gb's ram and see how that works out for you.You could look at the taskmanager to see how much ram is used while playing games.
For new ram try to find the same maker+type, otherwise at least try to match speed/latency's and voltage.

If your game settings are too high, the CPU will slow the GPU down. When the GPU has to wait for the CPU, this is called bottlenecking. With your over all system, you should try toning down the graphics settings some or up grade some of your components like Shlutka, said.

i checked task manager and I think ( not sure ) that the ram is the issue. mainly because when i run Mafia 2, the ram gets beyond 50% usage which what makes me unsure that its just the general system because the CPU is barely making it passed even 20% usage. if its not the ram then could it be the fact that the GPU isn't good enough?

Well thats the thing about bottle necking, your cpu can limit your gpu's performance, which shows lower % usage on Task Manger. Upgrade your cpu and ram, that would increase your fps alot. Then if you still aren't please, upgrade your GPU.

I don't think that the cpu is the bottleneck here.

You could,at the same settings, look at a lower res. to see if the fps are the same,if not is the cpu imo not the bottleneck. With the cpu at just 20% is it hard to believe that this would be the bottleneck.

Have you lowered settings to see if that gives better fps?
What does fraps say about the fps?

Playing FarCry 3, if I do not optimize my system and have all 4 cores of my i7 3770 running with the 8 threads hyperthreading, it bottlenecks my GTX 970. Freezes a few mins into the game. Otherwise 2 cores are parked when system is normally set at "balanced" and I am not doing much except surfing and reading at Tom's or elsewhere. I use iolo Liveboost to set my PC performance to ultra gaming so that all 8 threads are firing so with all video settings maxed out I cam play for hours perfectly till I manually quit the game. Bottlenecking does not happen at all with my system set up right for gaming.

EDIT:
Even MSIAA Anti-Aliasing set at 8, Z-sync at 2 and just everything as high as it will go, is no problems at all when PC is optimized correctly for gaming.

A very specific game you mention,a very different system at all.The o.p. has a gtx 750 ti which imo just will not be bottleneckt by that speedy dualcore.
