Trouble reaching BIOS: 5d (now 66) AMI Error Code

Greetings,

I am building a custom set up and I can't reach the BIOS. I am getting a 5d AMI error code, which is reserved for future AMI error listings. After looking through the forums, I found a thread about reinstalling the CPU, RAM and then resetting the CMOS for 5d codes. This has not fixed the issue.

Any suggestions? Did I possibly get a DOA CPU or RAM?

CPU: X4 860K 3.7 GHz (heat sink is an Artic Freeze that is compatible with FM2+ CPUs)
RAM: Team Elite 16 GB 1600 DDR3
GPU: 270x Toxic 2 GB
Harddrive: 240 GB Kingston SSD

Hi, A BIOS update is required for the CPU.
Check the board's BIOS version (last 4 digits on the thin barcode sticker on the motherboard).

Probably, but check firstly the board's BIOS version.

Then yes, at least 1301 needed. Download the latest version from ASUS, unzip and save it on a flash drive

Use BIOS Flashback (check the manual for the Flashback port and instructions).

So the BIOS Flash did not work. I looked at the memory compatibility in the MB manual. I actually do not see my specific Team Elite RAM (2x8 GB DDR3 1600 MHz) as compatible with my MB! Other Team models are compatible.

I am guessing the RAM I do have currently is just throwing off the timing?

I guess I could have done the flash incorrectly. But the light did not come on after holding the button for 3 seconds.

What happened during the Flashback? How long did it take? Can you describe the steps? Just to make sure that the BIOS was correctly flashed.

I downloaded the 1301 BIOS update for the A88X PRO. I renamed the file A88XPRO.CAP and dropped into my USB (with no other files on it). I inserted the USB, started it up, board/everything came on, and then held down the BiosFlash button down for 3 seconds. It should light up if it is updating, but no LED came on.

Don't start the board, just make sure that the power cables are connected and the green led on the board is on. Then press the button.

I am running a MemOK! test and the red LED continues to blink without any reboot of the system during the tuning process.

Does the system POST now, or still same error?

I flashed it. Put my GPU back in. Started her up. And now it is reading AMI 66? Which is a CPU Initialization is started?

It went through a number of other codes before stopping on 66.

I currently only have the SSD plugged in. I am guessing I need to include my 1 TB 7200 WD?

Try clearing the CMOS (unplug the power cord and remove the CMOS battery for a minute (or use the CLR CMOS switch. Leave single RAM module installed, graphics card, HDD, keyboard, mouse and start the board. See if still 66.

Ok. Took the CMOS battery and did the rest of what you said. It is still 66.

With no RAM, I get a 3F code and the red mem LED light comes on.

I tried the other RAM module and it is giving me a 00 code.

I put both RAM sticks in, and hit the MemOK! button. It then went through its codes again and landed on 00 again. Weird? No 3F anymore?

Redid the flash, and back to 00 with both RAM modules installed.

It might be a memory issue, but I'm not sure about it. Try borrowing a RAM module and testing, if possible. If still the same, return the board, or return the CPU and ask for one supported without a BIOS update.

Will do. It seems that 66 error codes are often associated with memory issues. It goes through a bunch of codes really quickly, but gets stuck on 66.
