What's caused my power supply to surge?

I was playing skyrim with insane amounts of texture and shadow mods for about an hour then my PSU surged causing my motherboard to fry. I know for sure that the wiring in my house is fine so I'm guessing that it was a faulty PSU. But I was wondering if skyrim with the mods may have caused it. I have a 780 so I was still getting above 60 fps and I have a 750w PSU which I asumed was enough. So can games cause surges or was it faulty?

Solution
A PSU dies because there's a defective component. Trusted sites that test PSUs usually increase the load above 100% and only a few low quality units blow. There's no way your PSU was loaded at close to 100% with your hardware; as hunter315 wrote, a quality 550W PSU is enough for that system. Play Skyrim and don't worry about the PSU. Even the best can sometimes fail.

I think my main question is 'can a demanding game cause the psu to surge?', because ill be fixing my pc soon and I don't want to run skyrim with mods again if it can damage it.

It was a corsair psu, had good reviews. I think my main question is 'can a demanding game cause the psu to surge?', because ill be fixing my pc soon and I don't want to run skyrim with mods again if it can damage it.

Thanks, I assumed that it was the psu or me just being clumsy with building the pc, but ill probably be paranoid when ever I play skyrim with mods now though :(

I know, I just want to be 100% sure that a game couldn't cause a 750w psu to die
