Hi all,

I am relatively new to the computing world, and I have gained a real interest in exploring operating systems and how they work.

Two in particular I have really wanted to get to know more in depth are Linux/Unix, and Windows Server.

I am not well educated on the two, but would like to know the basics about them and how they work. Just wondering if somebody can (in black and white) explain the fundamentals on how they both work? I am looking to enroll in a Linux/Unix course, but would like to have a base to build on before I sign up for an actual class. I'd like to gain an understanding on how the file systems, memory management, process/tasks management, disk management, and hardware/resource management work on both.

And just for fun, which one do you prefer? Is one more efficient than the other? (I am assuming it would depend on what you're trying to accomplish?)

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Well, It depends on what Distro of Linux or Edition of Windows Server you are looking at.
Overall, Windows Server is a little more easy to work with, It can install applications easily and is easy to use overall. On the other hand, Linux can be harder to use because some apps need to be installed via terminal (Command Prompt) and there can be issues with stuff like permissions.
