I am ready to take an LMG to my near $1500 system. I am at a loss for words at the amount of stupid S$%^ that can go wrong with my PC. Heck I should stick to Console gaming if this is the case, cause I am probably to dumb to figure anything out. Also A WARNING: This will be a very long post, and I commend those who read it and give input on the situation I am having. First and foremost here are my system specs:

*Intel I7 Haswell 4790K(4.0-4.4 GHZ) running Stock at the moment
*Phantek CPU Cooler PH-TC12DX_BL Dual 120mm PWM
*MSI Z87-GD65 Motherboard
*Corsair Neutron SSD 240GB
16GB DDR 3 Memory at 1600 (8gb is G.Skill Sniper, Other 8GB is Corsair Vengeance)
*Gigabyte NVIDIA GTX 980 GV-N980D5-4GD-B
*2x Western Digital Green 1.5TB HDD
*HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN 4TB
*Cooler Master Silent Pro M 1000 Watt PSU 80 Plus Bronze
*Windows 7 64 Bit SP1

This is roughly a month old build now. A preface, my previous rig, which I also built had no problems for 2 and 1/2 years. In the first 2 weeks everything was smooth sailing. I built this computer for heavy gaming and recording to Youtube/Twitch, and in those weeks I didn't have any issues using Audacity and OBS(Open Broadcast Software) recording games at 2560 x 1440 resolution in either 30 or 60 FPS. I also used a webcam recording at 720 or 1080p and everything was fine... Boy was I in for a surprise

Issue 1 - For some reason my games started to lag horribly during recording. I turned down the setting to 1080p and hell even opted for 30 FPS. Same result. And not even on graphically intense games. It turns out Audacity was the culprit...Audacity. Of all things. Probably one of the least resource hogging programs I had open would make games a slideshow. turning it off, with everything else on(webcam recording software) instant 60-130 FPS. I would have all those recording programs on a separate 1080p monitor and gamed on my 1440p one.

Issue 2- Aero...F$%^ing Aero started doing something extremely intense to bog down my machine. Unheard of. I would see slow transitions when I opened web pages, the task bar always lagged when I put my mouse cursor on it, as well as now, any programs I had open(windows) in the background, while I played, since I had Aero enabled would instantly bog down my machine. OBS has a setting under "Video" that says "Turn off Aero" I did this and The lag went away. So Something about Aero on my machine was causing terrible lag while recording. But it still didn't explain the "sluggish" feel when doing simple web browsing.

Issue 3 - Suddenly my computer was taken an extremely long time to boot up. On my last machine I used the same SSD I have now. The only thing I keep on it is my OS and drivers with some very small files here and there(like CPU-Id for example) I was seeing on my last build, and the first two weeks of this build, boot times of about 14-19 seconds- from hitting the power button to desktop(perfectly fine). It now increased to about 50-70 seconds. Now it's very sporadic Ill get decent boot up speeds to not so decent....

Issue 4- Aero is now gone. That's right. I turned on Shadowplay, after I thought all was good after updates, file checking, malware scans etc(see bottom at "Things I did" section), and Aero turned off. I didn't think anything at first , cause it behaved like OBS does when I open it since I have that setting checked. But what is weird is that Shadowplay doesn't support every game, but can still record unsupported ones if you enable" desktop capture" which I had enabled, but Shadowplay needs Aero to be turned "ON" for that to work(at least that's what it told me). So I went to turn it back on under personalize>aero themes and all the themes are set "basic" and cannot be changed. I...I actually am stumped on this one. I tried quite a few things (see below)

Issue 5- This is probably the most random and odd one. Whenever I restart my computer whether it be saving bios settings( "Save setting and reboot") having to after a driver installation, or what have you. My computer screen comes up black. System is on, all the fans are spinning, MOBO lights are on, but no picture. Screen is turned on, with the standby light on(instead of being Blue/green)...so yeah there's that. I actually have no clue on that one. Also shutting down the computer doesnt bring up the black screen. Only when I RESTART from Bios or Windows

Things I have NOTICED:

- Checking my temps with Real temp and HWmonitor, my CPU never reaches past 50C while rendering (using up 100% of the cpu while doing so) or heavy gaming but my GPU would get quite hot. Thought it was normal. but then I played bioshock Infiinte, which a GTX 980 should easily run...after 5-8 minutes checking my temps I was hitting about 80-82 Celsius...Is it me or is that a little high, especially after such little time? I was hearing reports that Under full load the GTX 980 was hitting 70C....

- During The "BlackScreen: restart crap, My keyboard and mouse where not lit up(backlights) during the whole time I would stare at the infinite darkness of my monitors wondering what in the hell is wrong with this crap. Although, everything internally was on and spinning those were not. The keyboard is a Logitech G710+ and the mouse is a G502 Proteus Core, in case it matters

- In the third week of this fiasco I got a couple of blue screens, all of which where SYSTEM_SERIVCE_EXCEPTION. I got two back to back when I was trying to record gameplay of an Nintendo 64 emulator with Dxtory. I was able to with shadowplay strangely.

Things I have TRIED:

-The obvious check for viruses/malware. Did both quick and full scans with Malwarebytes and Microsoft Security essentials both came back clean.

-Updates-pretty much updated everything that needed to be updated(except maybe the MOBO, I didn't cause I didn't want to screw up and brick it) programs, windows you name it.

-System Restore-Didn't really yield any great results, I am still unable to turn on Aero. For the life of me that is beyond my knowledge.

-CMD prompt- I ran sfc/scannow and came back saying no errors. I also made sure AHCI was turned on and checked in the command prompt to see if TRIM was enabled. Both were. Unplugging all non-essential USB devices also did nothing for boot up times. Aside from the keyboard and mouse I have Logitech webcam-c920 I believe and usb Mic - Audio technica AT2020.

-Checked the Motherboard and CPU temps- as stated above Idle CPU temps are in the mid 20s and reaching 44-50 under full load. I checked to see if there were any bent pins where the CPu goes. Didn't see any. Made sure all connection were firmly secured as well.

-Resetting the CMOS- I removed the CMOS battery as well as later hitting the "clear CMOS" switch. Didn't do anything to help the situation.

-Re-installing older graphics Driver- used the driver when the system was first working fine (344.16) I still cannot get Aero to work or fix the black screen restart crap.

-Re-installing The OS, clearing Main drive - I did both a re-install of Win 7 keeping old files, and another completely fresh....TWICE EACH! I know completely unecessary doing that many OS writes to the SSD. I used a tool (I forget the name)and made sure the speeds were good on all my drives and they were.

-Installed all necessary drivers from Mobo product page -self explanatory. I know the ones on the disc are pretty old.

In Conclusion

I think(but I know I am wrong) the trouble lies in either the GPU, cause of Aero not being able to turn on and high temps, or the mother board, cause of the restart black screen of death. I do not think it is the processor, mainly because I thought it was that before. I had a 4770k but returned it for a 4790k thinking my CPU was the cause(plus the 4770k I had was a S^&* overclocker). But two processors being faulty in a row? The cpu is usually the most stable of all components, no? I'm still having these issues, even after the swap. Sadly the Mobo and GPU cannot be returned, cause it's past the 30 days. If anyone knows what it can be or point me in the right direction or course of action I would greatly appreciate it. Sorry for the long post

Black screen and manual shutting of PSU is 99% VGA. My GTX 680 died few days ago in this venerable way. I ended up being unable to boot the system, each time Windows 7 load screen appeared, and wanted to load VGA drivers, black screen appeared, GPU went full fan speed, and I had to turn off the PC manually.

P.S.: 80°C is "officially" okay for 980, and was for 480 and 580 and 680 too, but they never were. From my 23 years of experience, all I can tell You is this, and I dare to make it universal till next big leap in technology.

- Limit for HDD is 30-35°C idle and 40°C burn, if it runs hotter, Your life span will most likely be shortened, and there's a massive chance for hardware/software errors within it's years of operation.
- limit...
Woa, that's quite a run mate. But believe me, I have similair rig, with Z97 Maximus mobo and 970 instead and a lot of drives, but I'm having similair issues with Windows 8, besides aero.

First thing I strongly suggest is trying to run on iGPU for some time. Second, the Corsair Neutrons are really fast drives in some systems, but they tend to do a lot of collateral damage. I've had about 30 pieces and I won't have any more, because all they brought me was trouble. I'd go after that one, it's totally off all the trouble, but believe me, what Neutrons did to me, was unspeakable of.

Third, I'd try to do a clean install of Windows on some other SSD/HDD/Partition and see what'll it do.

This is a huge cr*p situation, You're running Windows 7, and yes, I'd be running it still too, because Windows 8/8.1 is pure disaster, problem is mainstream support ends on january and yes, it's feelable a LOT even now.

In my 5 yo installation of W7 I've had massive turn off times, about 20-30 seconds, for 4 way raid, well, it's a lot. Drives were running 2200 MB/s readand/2000 MB/s write. W7 tends to get crumpy after a lot of bios settings and won't recover like Windows 8.

So my second suggestion is tryin' Windows 8 [yarr, try the pirated one for now :), buy one when it gets good] and see what'll it do.

I know it's kind of weird what I wrote, but try it, I have similiar experience in similair cases. Let me know how it went.

P.S.: Those two Greens are a very bad idea. This might sounds super weird, but I've had one dying Seagate like month ago on my old rig, and it was causing the same stuff as to You. Stutters, bzzz sounds and things, then my windows didn't boot up, windows 7. Seagate died, that's all. But Greens tend to do that even when healthy. Try to disconnect them for a while. This is horrible thing about XP, Vista, Seven, they get dragged down by one bad drive in the system, that has absolutely nothing to do with the system. That's how Windows 7 is. Only WIn 8 is partially immune.

And one more, try to hit this place with screenshot from Crystal Disk, just for info...

Update: Did a little more digging around and 80C is actually pretty normal temps for the GTX 980...for stock /facepalm. I downloaded Precision, and turned up the rpm of the fan by 400(max is 4092 or 100%) and now it stays at 70C with no throttling. I played the Evil Within and few other games maxed out, the card didn't skip a beat.

Update 2: I usually go back no more than 24 hours when doing a system restore, but last night I said "F$%^ it." and went ahead and went back 5 days. I know that's bad, but at that point I was just at wit's end. Once the computer restarted I got the black screen and had to manually power down, and power up for it to "register" Got to the desktop and on the bottom right corner I saw a dialog box saying: "New device found" clicked on it and said "Device Installed Correctly/successfully- I7 4790k"
Interesting. Also my Aero is back on. Have not tried recording or turning off aero and turning back on yet, but will do a few tasks today and report back on any weird behavior.

Alas, I still get a black screen whenever I restart/reboot from anywhere. That's the one throwing me a for a loop at the moment.

Bump! and a new update!

Well hopefully this doesn't get lost cause it seems I'm still not in the clear. I was able to record gameplay just fine, but it was during the render process that things got stupid. my render times have more than tripled.

I successfully flashed my bios, and everything is up an running on that front, I Also I re-installed Windows yet again, and during the re-installation process, Windows reboots a few times. Well, you guess it during each reboot I got a black screen. I have to manually shut off the PSU switch and flip it back on for it to "complete" the reboot cycle/sequence. Now I am sure it is hardware related. question is what? I will stress test some components and see what happens. Cause right now I am lost....

- Limit for HDD is 30-35°C idle and 40°C burn, if it runs hotter, Your life span will most likely be shortened, and there's a massive chance for hardware/software errors within it's years of operation.
- limit for CPU is 30-40°C idle and 50-60°C burn. Everything above, no matter what now-accessible technology is used, You risk lowering the life span of Your CPU. I have many clients who run their Core 2 Quad Q6600 at 85-95°C for years, but hell, that was Q6600, others who have strained their CPUs at 80-90°C are either dead, or damaged and causing bsods. This is not universal, it's very individual, but the chance is much higher above 60-65°C at burn, then below, that's also a fact
- limit for GPU is 30-35°C at idle, and 60-70°C at burn. You can burn Your GPU at 72-75°C while gaming, this is the "limit" from my own experience, where GPU can perform "just right" for about 2-3 years, before it dies. If You manage to keep her under 60°C, she can go 5+ years, which is useless of course, but there are like 20 480 that work till today, that are cooled with water by clients [water not built by me]
- I have no research done with RAM modules, because eventhough I have laser thermometer, I never care enough to test them, since RAM goes like forever, or dies within few days
- Eventhough I have done research with SSDs, it's like Intels/Kingstons/Mushkins don't die at all, ever, up to 90°C, which is not their own temperature, but temperature caused by environment [e.g. Brixes Wi-Fi module heats up mSATA Intel 525/530 up to 95-100°C and they do manage just fine, but they live too short for statistics].
- Motherboard chipset/controllers are highly individual, I would though keep them all under 50°C, for the sake of all other components and dissipated heat

That's that. I heed these "rules" I made myself for more than a decade, and 99% of my builds never suffer from any crashes or errors whatsoever, stripping out errors with Windows 8/8.1.

P.S.: What I wrote isn't official, it's also not worldly statistical, it's just what I respect.
