What's your budget? and CPU -> all newer mobo have at least PCI-E2 or 3 slots, and can run any good GPU.... If in the budget the nVidia 980 is the top single card, the Asus Strix is the one I picked up, then come the 780TI, and 970 (both nVidia), followed by the 780 (nVidia) and 290X(s) (AMD), there's al;so the Titan (overpriced and then the dual GPU cards, very expensive also)
